Mar 17, 2014 - 14:34

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Two people have been killed and hundreds marooned by rain-induced flooding in central Uruzgan province, an official said on Monday.

More than 100 houses had been destroyed as a result of five days of rains in different areas, the Afghanistaninfo-icon Natural Disaster Management head for Uruzgan said.

Ismatullah told Pajhwok Afghan News one person was killed in the Abragha area on the outskirts of Tirinkot and another in Gizab district.

Deh Rawud district chief, Amin Khaleqi, said two villages were under threat from the overflowing Helmand River.

“Hundreds of residents of Deh Zak and Sak Zak villages are marooned. In an effort to save their lives, they have climbed house roofs and trees,” he added.

In phone calls to authorities, the stranded residents are desperately seeking assistance. The government was yet to come to their rescue, the official said.

A former provincial council member from the district, Ibrahim Akhundzada, confirmed the river had burst its banks, threatening the two villages. He appealed to the government to airlift the marooned individuals.
